Dry Needling
Dry needling is a treatment technique using a sterile, single-use, fine needle to improve function within the body by interrupting myofascial dysfunction. Myofascial trigger points may form in muscle groups due to certain occurrences like injury, repetitive movements, nerve impingements, or over exertion. Dry needling has been shown to help decrease the pain associated with these ailments by:
- Attracting healing components to the area
- Disrupting soft tissue adhesions
- Reduces pain due to increase in natural opoid production
What are Myofascial Trigger Points?
Myofascial trigger points are a group of muscle fibers that have become shortened when activated and are unable to lengthen back to a relaxed state after use. Essentially, if your muscle fiber becomes too tight, it is unable to function normally which can cause pain, lack of mobility and inflammation.
Dry needling works to improve function by restoring the muscle’s ability to length and shorten at a normal range. When the needle is inserted into the trigger point, blood will pool and trigger the contracted muscle fiber to relax by supplying those fibers with fresh oxygen.
